At least 11 passengers were Monday night killed and 44 others were injured in two separate accidents on Mombasa Highway and Kisumu.
The first accident involved students from Chavakali Boys High in Kisumu.
One student was killed while at least 33 were injured in an accident involving a bus that was carrying Chavakali Boys High School students in Kisumu.
The injured were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for treatment following the Monday night accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, police said.
The Easy Coach bus that was ferrying the students to Nairobi following the end-term closure of schools lost control at the Mamboleo roundabout in Kisumu.
The student tragically died on the spot as the Easy coach bus, carrying students from the Western school to Nairobi for the school holiday, overturned.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander, Allan Mwangi said they are investigating the incident.
He said the driver seemed to have been negotiating the roundabouts when he lost control of the bus hit the guard rail and landed on the edge of the road.
It was then that the 17-year-old student died on the spot, witnesses said.
Another accident involving two passenger vehicles and a lorry at Salama area, on Mombasa highway claimed ten lives.
The deceased included two female juveniles aged between five and eight, a male juvenile aged about five years, three female adults, and four male adults.
The accident happened after the matatus collided head-on with an oncoming lorry on Monday night, police and witnesses said.
Police said the accident happened in the Mlima Kiu area and involved the matatus that was headed to Nairobi direction.
Witnesses said the lorry driver failed to keep to its proper traffic lane and also turned right abruptly and without due care and attention hence colliding head-on with the matatus from two local saccos.
The accident also affected a saloon car that was at the scene.
Four passengers were killed on the spot while others succumbed to the injuries in hospital, police said.
The injured were rushed to the Sultan Hamud Hospital with multiple injuries.
The rescue was badly hampered by rains that were being experienced in the area at that time, officials said.
The bodies were moved to a local mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
The accident affected traffic flow on the busy highway before more reinforcement arrived to help in managing the situation.
The highway is one of the leading in accidents.
This comes amid an ongoing campaign to address the rising cases of accidents in the country.
Police and officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority are engaged in a campaign to address the menace on the roads.
More than 1, 000 people have lost their lives in road accidents since January this year.
Tens of others are nursing wounds in various places after the accidents.
