A 12-year-old girl tragically drowned on Saturday while swimming in the swollen Kipsonoi River in Bomet County.
The incident took place in the afternoon around 4:00 pm when the girl was swimming with three of her friends.
Chemagel location chief Lenny Kirui confirmed the incident and explained that the girls had been in the river when the accident occurred.
“One girl drowned, while her three friends were fortunate to be rescued by herders who heard their cries for help from a distance,” said Kirui.
The chief added that the three rescued girls were rushed to Sotik Health Centre for treatment.
Fortunately, they were treated for shock and minor injuries before being discharged.
It was reported that the girls had gone to the river to wash their school uniforms in preparation for the upcoming school term.
After finishing the task, they decided to take a swim, which tragically led to the fatal accident.
Local residents and family members immediately began searching for the girl’s body, but efforts have been hampered by the high water levels of the swollen river.
As of Sunday, January 5, by midday, the girl’s body had still not been recovered.
Bomet County divers have since joined the search operations, working alongside locals in hopes of recovering the young girl’s body.
Authorities have urged residents to stay away from the river due to the dangerous conditions posed by the high water levels.
The community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young life, and efforts are ongoing to bring closure to the grieving family.
