A 20-year-old woman, Hegrah Bonareri Wanjiku, has been detained for 14 days as police investigate her alleged role in the murder of her husband.
Wanjiku, who is a mother of one, is suspected of killing Patrick Mwaniki Njagi at Ngamate Apartments in Zimmerman, Nairobi, on August 24, 2024.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations, through Corporal Charles Ombogo, reported that the incident was first brought to light by Sospeter Gaitho, who filed a report at Kasarani Police Station.
Wanjiku was arrested after Gaitho informed the authorities that a man had been found fatally stabbed at the apartment complex where the couple resided.
During court proceedings, Ombogo indicated that Wanjiku would be sent to Mathari Mental Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation to assess her mental state before she can stand trial.
Additionally, an autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death, while blood samples collected from the crime scene are awaiting DNA analysis at the Government Chemist.
The victim, Mwaniki Njagi, was a mobile phone technician based in Nairobi’s city center.
He reportedly sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest during what is described as a domestic dispute with his wife.
Magistrate Mary Njagi approved the 14-day detention period, underscoring the gravity of the offense and the tragic loss of life.
The magistrate’s ruling reflects the seriousness of the case, given that it involves a death.
Wanjiku will remain in custody at Kasarani Police Station until September 10, when the court will reconvene to consider the next steps in the investigation and legal proceedings.
This case continues to unfold as authorities seek to gather more information and evidence.
