A 27-year-old man has drowned while swimming with friends at Wanyiba Falls in the Rwamuthambi River, located in Kagio, Mutithi Ward, Mwea-West Sub-County, Kirinyaga County.
Witnesses, including Patrick Muchoki, described how the group of four friends had been swimming on Wednesday afternoon when the tragic incident took place.
“We’ve swum here before without issues, but suddenly, Peter Muhia, 27, began to struggle and called out for help.
Despite our efforts, we couldn’t reach him in time,” Muchoki recalled.
Muhia’s family, led by his aunt, Joyce Wangui, has remained at the river, concerned about the safety risks posed by the river’s strong currents, particularly near Wanyiba Falls.
“We’re asking for assistance to recover Peter’s body so we can give him a proper burial,” Wangui expressed.
Muhia’s brother, Billy Muhia, shared the family’s anguish as the search continued.
“We’ve been looking near Wanyiba Falls with little hope left.
My aunt even stayed here overnight, but we’ve reported the incident to Kiamaciri Police Station,” he said.
Local residents noted that this is not the first tragedy at Wanyiba Falls.
In March 2024, the body of an army officer was discovered nearby, highlighting the dangers associated with the area.
