This accident comes amid a rise in road accidents over the festive season.
On Monday, December 23, a tragic crash occurred at Matauro in the Duka Moja area along the Narok-Suswa-Mai Mahiu highway in Narok County, involving multiple vehicles.
At least eight people were confirmed dead in this incident.
Witnesses reported that the accident occurred around mid-morning when a lorry driver reportedly lost control, colliding with several vehicles.
According to police reports, the crash involved six vehicles and a motorcycle.
The incident began when a trailer, traveling from Narok to Mai Mahiu, suffered a tyre burst.
The driver lost control, causing the trailer to strike a Toyota Premio car, an Ena coach bus, and a Narok Line matatu, scattering the vehicles across the road.
Three occupants of the matatu were killed on the spot.
The rising number of road accidents, particularly during the festive season, has prompted increased enforcement efforts from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and traffic officers.
NTSA has stepped up road safety campaigns and compliance checks along major highways across the country.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi had earlier called for a nationwide crackdown on unlicensed and unroadworthy Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), citing a disturbing 11 percent increase in serious road injuries since 2023.
On December 19, Mudavadi announced plans to bolster police presence and patrols along major highways, both during the day and at night, in an effort to curb the rising accident rate.
