A police constable attached to Bondo Police Station in Siaya County shot himself dead on Friday following a domestic spat with his wife.
He had shot and injured the wife before turning the gun on himself, police said.
Confirming the incident, Bondo Sub-county Police Commander Ibrahim Kosi said the deceased officer, Michael Kyalo, reported for work as per routine where he was issued with a rifle.
Instead of heading towards his designated post, Kyalo made his way to his house where the incident happened Friday, July 7.
Kyalo’s wife, who was shot in the buttocks, is currently nursing injuries at Bondo Sub-County Hospital while the body of the deceased was moved to the same facility’s morgue.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, police said linking the shooting to stress at work.
Such cases are linked to societal stress which has caused many murder and suicide incidents, police said.
Up to three cases of suicide are reported daily in the country at an alarming rate.
Cases of suicide have been on the rise this year and authorities blame the trend on mental distress.
Police handled 499 cases in 2019, and 575 in 2020. At least 313 people are reported to have taken their lives between January and July 2021.
The majority of the victims were male, police reports say.
There is a drive to address the menace.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says such cases are attributed to joblessness, the breakup of relationships or a death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties, financial difficulties, bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression, and bipolar disorder.
Globally, close to 800,000 people die of suicide every year with an estimated 78 percent of cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
