A suspected robber was shot dead in a botched robbery in Mathare slums, Nairobi, and a knife was found on him.

Police said the incident happened on Monday night after the slain man and an accomplice tried to rob a taxi driver.

According to police, a taxi driver said he had received a request to ferry a passenger to Thika Road from the Kosovo area, Mathare.

On reaching the picking point, two men emerged and one jumped into the car and removed a knife ordering the driver to heed his orders to give out his mobile phone and money.

This caused commotion attracting the attention of police who were on patrol in the area.

Police responded there and managed to shoot dead one while the second suspect escaped.

Upon search a knife, a claw hammer, and a mobile phone were recovered from him, police said.

Meanwhile, police in Amukura, Teso North were forced to shoot into the air to save a coach who was being beaten up by fans during a football match.

The incident happened at Father Okodi Secondary School field in a match between Muyayi Young Star FC and Opeto FC.

Police officers responded and found the Opeto FC team assaulting the Muyayi young star coach.

The officers tried to rescue him but the opposing team became violent prompting the officers to shoot in the air to disperse them.

The injured victim was rushed to Lukolis dispensary where he was treated and discharged.
