South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his satisfaction with the recent agreement between Israel and Hamas, leading to a four-day halt in hostilities.
The commencement of this pause is set to be announced within the next 24 hours.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas will release 50 hostages seized last month, while Israel will reciprocate by releasing approximately 150 Palestinian prisoners.
President Ramaphosa, in a statement, emphasized South Africa’s commitment to peace, justice, and adherence to international law across the globe.
He stated, “As a member of the international community that stands for peace, justice, and the rule of international law in all parts of the world, South Africa welcomes the agreement reached.”
The African National Congress (ANC)-led South African government has long-standing ties with the Palestinians.
In a move reflecting their stance, the government has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by mid-December, citing alleged war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.
Accusing Israel of war crimes, South Africa’s government aligns with the Palestinian cause, while Israel asserts its actions as self-defense.
The Israeli military’s significant operation in Gaza was launched in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, resulting in over 1,200 casualties and more than 200 individuals being taken hostage.
Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reports a toll of at least 14,000 lives lost since the initiation of Israel’s retaliatory campaign.
President Ramaphosa expresses hope that the temporary ceasefire will not only provide relief but also contribute to ongoing efforts for a comprehensive resolution to the conflict.
