Anticipation Of Fuel Price Drop In Kenya Before EPRA Monthly Review

Fuel prices in Kenya are expected to decrease as the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) prepares for its monthly review on Thursday.

Kenya’s energy regulator revises fuel prices on the 14th day of each month, and the upcoming review follows President William Ruto’s announcement last month, hinting at a decline in December.

In a speech on November 18 in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, Ruto assured that the government is taking necessary measures to consistently lower fuel prices in the coming months.

“We have found ways to prevent fuel prices from surpassing a certain point; many Kenyans would suffer,” stated the Head of State during the November review.

He added, “The prices will further decrease next month and progressively in the following months until we can effectively manage our economy.”

In the EPRA’s November 14 review, the cost of super petrol remained high at Sh.217.

However, diesel and kerosene prices were slightly reduced by Sh.2 per liter to Sh.203.47 and Sh.203.06, respectively, in Nairobi.

Concerns were raised as the international fuel costs experienced fluctuations over the last six months, dropping significantly to USD 804 per metric ton in October – the lowest since May this year.

Nevertheless, this decline has not yet been reflected in Kenya’s fuel prices.

Historically, increases in landed costs have resulted in corresponding pump price increments, while international price declines have led to local pump price reductions in the subsequent month.

Recently, a petition was filed to prevent EPRA from upwardly reviewing fuel prices.

The legal services NGO Kituo cha Sheria is seeking conservatory orders from the court to halt the energy regulator’s proposed increase.

The case is currently pending a decision.
