Unruly Passenger Forces Tokyo-Seattle Flight To Turn Back After Biting Flight Attendant

An American passenger reportedly attacked a female flight attendant mid-air on Tuesday, compelling an All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight bound for Seattle to reverse course and return to Tokyo, as confirmed by an airline representative.

Flight ANA 118 took off from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport at 9:47 p.m. local time, only to turn back slightly over an hour into its journey, according to information from the flight-tracking website Flightradar24.

The male passenger, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended by authorities upon the plane’s arrival in Tokyo, as stated by an ANA spokesperson.

The spokesperson also mentioned that the female flight attendant suffered minor injuries in the incident.

While the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department refrained from sharing additional details about the case, this incident is not an isolated one.

In a similar occurrence in 2022, two passengers were fined substantial amounts for assaulting crew members and fellow passengers on separate flights operated by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

The fines imposed, amounting to $81,950 and $77,272, respectively, marked the largest penalties ever issued by the Federal Aviation Administration against individual passengers for disruptive behavior on aircraft.

This incident contributes to a growing trend of disruptive behavior by passengers, as evidenced by other recent occurrences.

For instance, an American Airlines flight had to be diverted to a Texas airport on January 3 after a passenger allegedly assaulted a flight attendant and at least one police officer.
