Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium Set For Major Sports Events, Assures Ababu Namwamba

Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium is gearing up to become a hub for significant national sports events, with Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba pledging to make it happen.

Meanwhile, Governor Kihika eyes the African Cup of Nations, AFCON 2027.

Namwamba praised the progress in refurbishing Afraha Stadium to meet international standards.

He pledged to make Nakuru a key destination for major sports events, beginning this weekend.

“We’re set to host major sports events starting this weekend, and we commit to making Nakuru a regular venue for such events, as requested by Governor Kihika,” stated Namwamba.

He assured that an assessment team would be dispatched to evaluate Afraha Stadium’s condition, hinting that events could happen “sooner than you imagine,” depending on the stadium’s state.

“I’ll be in Nakuru this weekend to kick off part of the Motorsports’ Autocross Series.

Additionally, we’ve coordinated the WRC Safari rally in Naivasha to coincide with Easter Weekend, ensuring our community plays a central role in hosting this event,” announced Namwamba.

Speaking at the launch of the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) for 2022-2027 in Nakuru, Namwamba highlighted the progress.

Governor Kihika, aiming to complete the stadium and position it for AFCON 2027 consideration, stressed the importance of infrastructure development and economic growth to enhance residents’ quality of life.

The installation of a tartan track and other major works align with Sports Kenya’s standards for a pitch and running track, meeting international requirements.

“Driven by the principle of government continuity, we prioritized completing stalled projects during our first year in office.

Failing to finish these projects would be a disservice to taxpayers.

Afraha Stadium and the construction of Keringet High Altitude Sports Academy are among these projects,” Kihika affirmed.
