Microsoft Appoints Co-Founder Of DeepMind For AI Division Leadership

Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, announced his new role as the head of a freshly established consumer AI division at Microsoft.

Suleyman, a prominent figure in the AI field, joins Microsoft as it continues its advancements in generative AI, a technology that has been integrated into various products, notably the Copilot chatbot.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Suleyman shared on social media, “I’m excited to announce that today I’m joining @Microsoft as CEO of Microsoft AI.

I’ll be leading all consumer AI products and research, including Copilot, Bing and Edge.”

Suleyman’s transition involves stepping down from his position as chief executive of Inflection, a startup he co-founded. Inflection was recognized as a potential rival to companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, particularly in the development of AI models akin to ChatGPT.

Notably, several key members from Inflection, including co-founder Karén Simonyan, will be joining Suleyman at Microsoft, enhancing the company’s talent pool, as noted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Nadella reiterated Microsoft’s commitment to AI innovation, emphasizing the continued collaboration with OpenAI, an entity in which Microsoft made a substantial investment of $13 billion the previous year.

In response to Suleyman’s appointment, an OpenAI representative expressed congratulations and anticipation for future collaborations.

Microsoft’s strategic hiring of Suleyman signifies its bolstered position in the AI landscape, further solidifying its investments and partnerships beyond its association with OpenAI.

Recent endeavors include a partnership with Mistral AI, a promising French startup specializing in generative AI.

Microsoft’s aggressive pursuit of AI technologies has propelled it ahead of competitors like Google, resulting in its ascent to the world’s largest company by market capitalization, surpassing Apple.

Suleyman’s previous venture, DeepMind, was acquired by Google in 2014, and the integration process was completed last year.

As Microsoft expands its influence in the AI sector, regulatory bodies in the United States and Europe have intensified scrutiny of its collaborations, particularly with OpenAI, amidst broader concerns regarding tech giants’ dominance in emerging industries.
