Two Kenyan startups, Jacaranda Health, and EIDU, have been selected to join Google’s Generative AI Accelerator Program, making them eligible for a portion of the over $20 million (Sh.2.64 billion) funding pool dedicated to projects focusing on generative AI.
The two Kenyan startups are among 21 organizations that comprise the inaugural cohort of Google’s Generative AI program, with other participants hailing from countries like the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Notably, Jacaranda Health and EIDU are the only African representatives in this group.
Jacaranda Health uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extend digital healthcare services to underprivileged mothers, adapting the technology for African languages to enhance accessibility.
Meanwhile, EIDU employs generative AI to create custom learning experiences for children in low and middle-income regions, providing personalized tutoring through digital platforms.
The six-month accelerator program is designed to assist nonprofit organizations in developing impactful generative AI applications.
Participants will work on projects addressing a range of societal issues including climate change, economic growth, health, education, and crisis management.
The program offers a variety of resources, including technical training, workshops, mentors, and pro bono support from dedicated AI experts.
Alongside these resources, Google.org is providing over $20 million (Ksh.2.64 billion) in funding to support the cohort’s projects.
Dorothy Ooko, Head of Communications and Public Affairs at Google, Africa, commented on the potential impact of generative AI on social initiatives: “Generative AI can empower social impact teams to be more productive, creative, and effective in serving their communities.
We look forward to helping the chosen organizations harness the potential of this technology to tackle some of the continent’s most pressing challenges.”
Through this program, Jacaranda Health and EIDU will have the opportunity to further their missions and potentially bring significant benefits to their communities and beyond.
