Earthquake Shakes Nairobi And Surrounding Areas

On Tuesday night, residents throughout Nairobi experienced seismic activity, raising concerns about potential structural damage and safety hazards.

Reports of aftershocks came in from several areas, including Ruaka, Lower Kabete, and Kangemi.

Volcano Discovery, a site specializing in lithospheric information, has yet to provide details on the earthquake’s magnitude or depth, first detected around 8:31 pm.

“If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes.

The location, magnitude, and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model,” reads the Volcano Discovery website.

“They are temporary until our AllQuakes monitoring service receives more exact scientific data from a national or international seismological agency.

Check back here shortly and stay safe.”

Google reports that the tremor originated 38 kilometers from Nairobi and registered a magnitude of 4.2.

According to the California Earthquake Authority, a magnitude IV earthquake is moderate, typically felt indoors by many and outdoors by a few during the day.

At night, some might be awakened by the shaking.

The authority’s website states, “Dishes, windows, doors disturbed; walls make cracking sound.

Sensation like heavy truck striking building. Standing motor cars rocked noticeably.”

Since 2022, Kenya has experienced three earthquakes with magnitudes above 4 and up to 5.0, according to Volcano Discovery.
