The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday arrested a civil society boss over links to bribe soliciting.
Peter Odhiambo Agoro who is the Chairperson of the Consortium of Civil Societies in Kenya was arrested over extortion of Sh.3 million from a Chief Executive Officer of a State Corporation.
He was escorted to EACC Integrity Centre Police Station, Nairobi where it was stated that he went through the process of processing before being arraigned in court for plea taking.
Confirming the arrest, the Commission, through its Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, revealed that the civil society leader demanded the bribe as an inducement and facilitation fees so as not to pursue and publicize accusations of procurement malpractices he claimed to have against the Parastatal CEO.
He however did not disclose the name of the CEO said to have been targeted for extortion.
“The suspect accepted the complainant’s plea to reduce the demanded amount to Sh 2 million which was to be paid in two instalments of Sh1.5 million today (Tuesday) and Sh500,000 later,” said Ngumbi.
He added that unknown to him (Agoro) the suspect, the complainant had already notified EACC of the matter.
Ngumbi said EACC officers undertook an operation this morning leading to the arrest of the suspect after receiving the first instalment of Sh1.5 million which was in USD10,800 USD and Sh100,000 denominations.
“He will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” said Ngumbi in a press statement.
