Kiambu County Participates In World Clean-Up Day 2024 To Promote Waste Management Awareness

On Saturday, the Kiambu County Government participated in the global observance of World Clean Up Day 2024, an initiative designed to raise awareness about the waste management crisis and promote sustainable practices among the public.

Held at Thika Stadium and organized by the Directorate of Environment and Waste Management, the event centered around the theme “Make Room for Life,” highlighting the county’s commitment to preserving natural resources through responsible waste management and recycling.

During his address, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) David Kuria stressed the urgent need for action regarding the global waste crisis.

He noted that Kenya generates 22,000 tonnes of waste daily, but only 38 percent is collected, with less than 10 percent undergoing recycling.

“The inefficiency in waste collection leads to a large amount of unprocessed waste, contributing to illegal dumpsites and incineration, both of which pose serious environmental and health risks,” Kuria explained.

He urged residents to take personal responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings, suggesting that innovative waste management solutions are crucial in combating climate change.

The event saw collaboration from various partners, including THIWASCO, Uzuri Institute, Kevian, and Avenue Hospital, who worked alongside local residents to clean areas of Thika town and unblock drains.

This initiative successfully collected three tonnes of solid waste.

In addition, the county organized its monthly clean-up day, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from community members across all wards.

World Clean Up Day was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly on December 8, 2023, through resolution 78/122.

The initiative seeks to create partnerships aimed at tackling inadequate solid waste management and promoting sustainable development.

On this day, individuals, governments, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to engage in clean-up efforts and devise strategies for managing waste effectively.

According to the 2023 Annual Report, last year’s global clean-up attracted 19.1 million participants.
