In a dramatic turn of events at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), Kenya and other developing nations walked out of a critical meeting on November 23, rejecting a $300 billion climate finance proposal.
The offer, meant to support vulnerable countries in the fight against climate change, was deemed “insulting” by the very nations it was intended to help.
Initially, developed countries proposed $250 billion in annual funding, a figure that was swiftly rejected by developing countries demanding at least $1 trillion per year.
After tense negotiations on Friday night and Saturday morning, the proposal was marginally increased to $300 billion.
However, this was still far from enough, according to small island states and least-developed nations, who criticized the revised offer as inadequate and walked out of the meeting in protest.
Kenya’s Special Climate Envoy, Ali Mohamed, voiced his nation’s firm stance, stating,
“We are not prepared to accept things that cross our red lines,” signaling that Kenya and its allies were unwilling to compromise on what they deemed necessary for climate justice.
Cedric Schuster, Chairperson of the Association of Small Island States (AOSIS), expressed the frustration of the most vulnerable nations, saying,
“We are among the worst affected by this climate crisis, yet our voices continue to be ignored.
We need to be shown the regard our dire circumstances demand.”
The $300 billion proposal was aimed at helping developing countries wean off fossil fuels, adapt to climate impacts, and compensate for the destruction caused by extreme weather events.
This new deal was set to replace the previous $100 billion annual commitment, which expires this year.
However, delegates criticized COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev for rushing the deal through without proper consultation, accusing wealthy nations of being overly frugal and dismissive of the urgency of the crisis.
With tensions high and many nations unsatisfied, the fight for climate justice continues.
