40 Health Facilities Removed From Social Health Insurance Scheme

The Social Health Authority has suspended 40 health facilities across the country from participating in the Social Health Insurance Scheme, citing compliance concerns under the Social Health Insurance Act, No. 16 of 2023.

The announcement, published in Gazette Notice No. 10944 and signed by Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority, invokes Section 48(6) of the Act, which empowers the Authority to take such action against facilities that fail to meet established standards or regulations.

“The health facilities listed in the schedule shall not be entitled to any benefit from the Social Health Authority during the period of their suspension,” the notice reads in part.

Affected Facilities Span 14 Counties

The suspended facilities are spread across multiple counties, including Nairobi, Homa Bay, Bungoma, Mandera, Kakamega, Wajir, Kilifi, Kajiado, Kirinyaga, and Kisumu.

Some of the facilities named include:

  • Rachuonyo County Hospital – Homa Bay
  • Salama Yard Medical Centre – Nairobi
  • Nabuala Hospital – Bungoma
  • Vebeneza Medical Centre (Tassia) – Nairobi
  • St. Mark Orthodox Hospital (Chavakali) – Vihiga
  • ABM Specialized Hospital – Nairobi
  • Jambo Jipya Hospital (Mtwapa) – Kilifi
  • Lifecare Hospitals Bungoma Ltd – Bungoma
  • Al-Masry Nursing Home Limited – Mandera
  • Zamzam Nursing Home (Rhamu) – Mandera

The reasons for suspension have not been publicly detailed, though such action typically relates to issues around licensing, compliance with service standards, fraud, or malpractice concerns.

Affected facilities will be ineligible to receive reimbursements or payments through the Social Health Insurance Fund during the suspension.

The public is advised to consult the Social Health Authority for updates on reinstatement or alternative accredited facilities.

This move underscores the government’s continued push to strengthen oversight and ensure the delivery of quality, ethical, and accountable healthcare services under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) framework.

A full list of the suspended health facilities is available in The Kenya Gazette Vol. CXXVII—No. 168, published on August 7, 2025.
