Government Signs Landmark Agreement To Reserve 20% Of Affordable Housing For Teachers

The government has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Affordable Housing Board and teachers’ unions at State House, Nairobi.

The agreement guarantees that 20% of all Affordable Housing units will be reserved for teachers, in recognition of their significant contribution to the housing levy amounting to sh.900 million monthly (13% of total contributions).

President William Ruto, speaking during the Waalimu Na Rais Forum on September 13, emphasized the need to reward teachers’ efforts by ensuring access to decent housing.

The President also announced a planned overhaul of the teachers’ medical scheme, citing inefficiencies and higher costs compared to other sectors.

He directed the Ministry of Education to review the current package in consultation with health experts and teachers’ representatives.

Additionally, Ruto unveiled plans to double funding for teacher promotions from sh.1 billion to sh.2 billion, enabling the promotion of at least 50,000 teachers annually beginning next financial year.

This follows recent controversy over the President’s offer to support Harambee Stars players with housing, which was clarified by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah as a commitment to help pay deposits within legal housing allocation procedures.
