Senate Speaker Amason Kingi Mourns Death of His Bodyguard

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi is grieving the loss of his bodyguard, describing the death as sudden and deeply painful.

In a statement released on Friday, January 2, Kingi said he was heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Corporal John Lwane Lumumba, who had been part of his personal security team.

Kingi recalled their final moments together, expressing shock at how quickly events unfolded. He noted that they had been walking and chatting shortly before he received news that Lumumba had died.

The Speaker said the corporal had shown no signs of illness in the days leading up to his death, making the loss even more difficult to comprehend.

He also stressed that their bond went far beyond work, describing Lumumba as more than just a security officer.

“To me, you were not simply a bodyguard, but family,” Kingi said, praising Lumumba’s dedication, professionalism and unwavering loyalty in the line of duty.

As of the time of publication, details surrounding the circumstances of Lumumba’s death had not been made public, with authorities yet to issue an official statement on the cause or timing.

Lumumba’s passing comes amid a series of recent losses involving security officers attached to senior political figures. In April 2025, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga lost his longtime aide and bodyguard, George Oduor, who died at Nairobi West Hospital after being admitted for two weeks.

Oduor was widely recognised for his constant presence alongside Raila at rallies and public engagements.

In May 2025, former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba also announced the death of his bodyguard of 18 years, Corporal Jonah Kemboi Rotich. Rotich succumbed to multiple health complications and was buried in Eldoret on June 3, 2025.
