Gachagua Fires Back After Ruto Criticises Him for Asking Youth to Protect Him

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has retaliated against President William Ruto following criticism over his appeal to youths to provide security during public appearances.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 13, Gachagua accused Ruto of deploying thugs to disrupt his events. He argued that if the President objects to young people offering protection, he should cease sending his supporters to attack his meetings or intrude into places of worship.

“Mr William Ruto, if you are concerned about young people defending their leaders, then stop dispatching your goons to attack them, their gatherings, and even places of worship,” Gachagua said.

He further urged the President to direct the alleged goons towards lawful economic activities rather than using them to disturb his events. “Empower these individuals to engage in meaningful and legal work instead of harming innocent Kenyans, particularly women and children. That way, there would be no need for any protection,” he added.

The confrontation follows remarks made by President Ruto on Tuesday in Samburu County, where he condemned Gachagua’s request for youth protection. The President questioned why a politician would instruct young people to arm themselves while he campaigns.

“I recently heard a leader tell youths to pick up clubs and machetes to protect him at certain events. Turning Kenyan youth into personal bodyguards while living in comfort is completely irresponsible,” Ruto stated.

The dispute comes shortly after Gachagua warned that his safety was compromised following the withdrawal of his state-provided security. On Monday, January 12, he called on the government to reinstate his protection, emphasising that, despite leaving office, his nationwide following and seniority in public service warrant security, particularly given his influence in the upcoming presidential election.
