Motorists in Nairobi should brace for major traffic disruptions beginning this weekend as the government implements heightened security and traffic control measures ahead of the African Forward Summit 2026.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the National Police Service announced that temporary traffic interruptions will affect several major roads across the city from May 10 to May 12, 2026, during the high-profile summit.
The affected routes include Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, Thika Road, Limuru Road, Kiambu Road, and roads within the Nairobi Central Business District.
Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri said the measures are intended to guarantee public safety and ensure smooth management of the international conference expected to attract regional and global delegates.
The police further announced that from midnight on Monday, May 11, several roads surrounding the Kenyatta International Convention Centre will be closed to all traffic except vehicles accredited for the summit.
The roads to be closed are City Hall Way, Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue and Taifa Road.
“The National Police Service is working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure smooth traffic flow and a successful event,” the statement said.
Motorists have been advised to cooperate with officers deployed along the affected routes, observe traffic regulations, and seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
Police also warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating traffic rules during the period of the summit.
Nairobi police commander Issa Mohamud said they had mobilized enough personnel to ensure the event goes on smoothly.
