A police officer is recovering in hospital after accidentally shooting himself during a patrol operation in Seme Sub-County, Kisumu County, on Wednesday night.
Police said the incident occurred at around 8:00 p.m. in Ramuya area, near the border between Seme and Gem sub-counties.
The officers were conducting a routine patrol when they spotted a suspicious motorcycle entering a homestead.
As they moved in to investigate, a commotion reportedly broke out.
During the incident, the corporal of police accidentally discharged one round of 7.62x39mm ammunition from his AK-47 rifle, striking himself in the right leg.
The bullet caused a fracture to his tibia, police said.
Meanwhile, the motorcyclist who had attracted the officers’ attention managed to escape from the scene on the motorcycle and has not been traced.
The injured officer was initially rushed to Akala Health Centre for first aid before being referred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.
Investigators recovered a spent 7.62x39mm cartridge at the scene.
The AK-47 rifle involved in the incident, together with a magazine containing 29 rounds of ammunition, was seized and retained as exhibits for investigations.
Police said the matter is being investigated by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Seme to establish the circumstances that led to the accidental discharge.
No other injuries were reported.
Police said the incident was an accident.
