Police in Busia County are investigating the death of an unidentified woman whose body was recovered from a borehole in Butula Sub-County.
According to police, the incident was reported at about 6:42 p.m. on June 30, 2026, after an unknown woman, believed to be about 24 years old, allegedly jumped into a water borehole within a homestead in Bukhalalire Sub-location, Marachi Central Location.
Police officers from Bumala Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) responded to the scene and found the woman’s body lodged inside the borehole, which is approximately 35 feet deep.
Officers from the Busia County Government’s Directorate of Disaster Management were called in to assist with the recovery operation.
The body was safely retrieved from the borehole and was found to have no visible physical injuries.
Crime scene personnel processed and photographed the scene before the body was moved to Busia County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting identification and a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
