For the seventh time in a row, acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has failed to attend a court hearing regarding the recent abduction of three men in Kitengela.
On Monday, the state counsel representing Masengeli informed the court that he is currently occupied with operational duties in Wajir, which prevents him from appearing.
This absence follows Masengeli’s previous request for an extension, citing official duties in Mombasa, as noted by Counsel Wanjiku Mwangi.
The petitioners, represented by lawyer Nelson Havi, have raised concerns about the continued defiance of the acting IG.
Havi questioned how long the court will permit Masengeli to disregard summons and delegate his responsibilities to his deputy.
He argued that Masengeli’s repeated defiance warrants a strong legal response, including possible removal from office.
Havi stated, “We will request the court to convict the acting IG for contempt and impose the most severe legal consequences.
Gilbert Masengeli should not be allowed to hold public office as if it were his personal domain.”
Faith Odhiambo, president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), supported Havi’s position, criticizing Masengeli’s absence.
She pointed out, “The acting IG was seen at the coast last week, taking photos and socializing instead of complying with court orders.”
Masengeli is expected to address the court regarding the whereabouts of Jamil Longton, his brother Aslam Longton, and activist Bob Njagi,
Who were allegedly abducted by individuals believed to be police officers on August 19, 2024, during the Gen Z protests.
