All 39 people aboard a passenger boat travelling from Kenya to Zanzibar were rescued after the vessel encountered rough seas and began capsizing off the Kwale coast on Saturday morning.
Police said the incident occurred about 10 miles east of Shimoni in Lunga Lunga Sub-county.
The vessel, MV Siri ya Mafanikio, was carrying 29 passengers and 10 crew members and was en route to Pemba Island in Zanzibar when it ran into strong winds, powerful currents and high waves.
Authorities said the boat was struck by heavy tides and began capsizing in deep waters.
Officers from the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), assisted by Kenya Navy personnel, responded immediately after receiving reports of the maritime emergency.
The rescue teams managed to save all passengers and crew before towing the damaged vessel back to the shore at Shimoni Port.
Police confirmed that all 39 people on board were accounted for and that no fatalities or injuries were reported.
The Kenya Coast Guard Service is handling further investigations into the incident.
And police in Meru County are investigating an incident in which a suspect sustained a gunshot wound after an officer’s firearm allegedly discharged accidentally during an arrest.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday in the Milimani area near Huduma Centre.
Police officers on patrol said they spotted four people behaving suspiciously.
As they approached to question them, one of the individuals fled while the remaining three, who were with a motorcycle, were ordered to surrender.
Police said one of the suspects allegedly became violent and attacked the officers during the arrest.
In the ensuing commotion, a police constable’s Beretta pistol reportedly discharged one round accidentally.
The three suspects were arrested and booked into the cells at Meru Police Station without initially reporting any injuries.
However, about an hour later, one of the detainees complained of pain, numbness and bleeding from his right arm.
Police examined him and established that he had sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and upper arm.
The officer in charge was informed, and the injured suspect was immediately escorted to Kirua Mission Hospital for treatment.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge and the shooting.
