Tragedy struck in Kibarage Slums, Gigiri area, Nairobi, on Thursday, January 2, when an 11-month-old child was killed in a devastating fire.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. while the child and her family were sleeping, with the cause of the blaze still under investigation by the police.
The fire quickly spread, destroying more than ten structures in the area, and it took considerable time for firefighters to contain it.
A Nairobi City County Fire Brigade engine arrived on the scene to assist locals in battling the flames.
It was during the search for survivors that the child’s remains were discovered in the home.
Witnesses and police reports confirmed the child had been burned beyond recognition, and property of unknown value was also destroyed in the blaze.
Many residents were left homeless and are now seeking assistance to rebuild their structures.
The child’s remains were taken to the mortuary pending further investigation into the cause of the fire.
In a separate incident, a minor tragically lost her life in the Soweto Slums in Kayole.
On Wednesday afternoon, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl choked to death while being fed porridge by her caregiver.
According to the caregiver, the child developed breathing difficulties during the feeding.
Despite immediate efforts to rush the child to a nearby chemist and then to Mama Lucy Hospital, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The parents had left the child in the caregiver’s care while they ran errands.
The caregiver has been detained by police for questioning as part of the investigation into the incident.
The girl’s body was moved to the mortuary for further examination.
This tragic event has sparked calls for families to hire trained caregivers to ensure the safety of young children, although the cost of training remains a significant barrier.
