Andre Braugher, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” has sadly passed away at the age of 61 due to a brief illness, as confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen to CNN.
Braugher began his remarkable career with a poignant performance as a sensitive soldier in the 1989 film “Glory,” depicting a unit of Black soldiers during the Civil War
Following this, he portrayed baseball legend Jackie Robinson in the TV movie “The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson” before gaining widespread recognition for his Emmy-winning role as Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC series “Homicide.”
Beyond “Homicide,” Braugher continued to make a significant impact in the entertainment industry.
He appeared in various films, including the thriller “Primal Fear” and Spike Lee’s “Get on the Bus,” as well as the sci-fi thriller “Frequency.”
Subsequently, he took the lead in “Gideon’s Crossing,” playing a brilliant oncologist who mentors young doctors.
His talent garnered further acclaim with a second Emmy win in 2006 for the FX miniseries “Thief,” earning a total of 11 nominations throughout his career.
Braugher’s versatility was showcased in the critically acclaimed series “Men of a Certain Age” and the long-running comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” where he portrayed Captain Ray Holt, receiving Emmy nominations for both shows.
Terry Crews, Braugher’s co-star in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” expressed his grief on Instagram, remembering the actor’s irreplaceable talent and the invaluable lessons he imparted during their time together.
NBC and Universal Television also released a statement, recognizing Braugher as an actor others aspired to be, praising his ability to infuse characters with both ferocity and dignity.
The statement acknowledged his impactful performances and stated that Braugher’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Born in Chicago, Braugher, a Stanford University graduate and Juilliard attendee, showcased his versatility on stage in the New York Shakespeare Festival and as the voice of the villainous Darkseid in the animated “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.” Braugher leaves behind his wife, Ami Brabson, who is also an actor, and they were married in 1991.
