At least five people are feared dead after a tragic truck accident occurred on Sunday evening in Mabera, Migori County, along the notorious black spot near the bridge from Nyabohanse.
The truck, which was transporting maize from Sirare to Migori, reportedly lost control and collided with two motorbikes, killing all five individuals at the scene.
Eyewitnesses described the horrific scene as the overloaded lorry veered off course, hitting two motorbikes, one carrying two female teachers and the other a rider.
A pedestrian who was standing by the roadside was also struck by the vehicle and perished.
The force of the impact was so intense that the bodies of the victims were flung several meters away from the site.
The driver of the truck sustained severe injuries and was unconscious when rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Migori County Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem will be conducted by a government pathologist.
This fatal accident has added to the growing concerns over road safety in the region.
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 4,282 people lost their lives on the roads between January and November 2024.
Pedestrians were the most affected group, accounting for 1,637 of the fatalities, followed by motorcyclists at 1,045 and passengers at 788.
Accidents are particularly common on weekends and holidays, with the hours between 5 pm and 8 am being the most dangerous.
