At least six people have reportedly died and nine others were injured after a 44-seat tourist submarine sank off the coast of Hurghada, a popular resort town along Egypt’s Red Sea.
The incident occurred near the waters in front of the Marriot Hotel in Hurghada, involving a vessel operated by Sinbad Submarines.
According to municipal officials, as reported by Reuters and the Associated Press, six foreign nationals, whose identities have yet to be confirmed, lost their lives in the tragedy.
The cause of the submarine’s sinking remains unclear at this time.
Sinbad Submarines, the company behind the vessel, offers short tourist trips using two submarines with a maximum depth range of 25 meters, allowing guests to “experience the beauty of the Red Sea’s underwater world without getting wet,” as stated on its website.

The local governorate confirmed that all the deceased were foreign citizens, and emergency teams were able to rescue 29 individuals. The survivors were promptly transported to hospitals in Hurghada.
In light of regional conflicts, several tourist companies have either suspended or restricted operations on the Red Sea due to safety concerns.
The Russian Embassy in Egypt reported that all the passengers aboard the ill-fated submarine were Russian nationals.
A Facebook post from the embassy stated that there were 45 people on board, including children. The embassy also confirmed that four individuals had died in the incident.
