Authorities have initiated investigations to determine the cause of probe clash between National Police Service officers and military personnel at the Likoni ferry crossing channel in Mombasa.
A video circulating on social media captured the incident, showing armed Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel involved in a confrontation with police officers stationed at the busy crossing point.
Amidst the commotion, one KDF soldier was seen striking a security officer, while others from both the KDF and National Police Service attempted to defuse the situation.
While the exact trigger for the clash remains unclear, an official military vehicle was observed at the scene, seemingly awaiting clearance to board the ferry.
In response to the incident, the KDF issued a statement acknowledging the occurrence and expressing regret. They assured that Military Police and relevant investigative bodies are currently handling the matter to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
Emphasizing their commitment to professionalism, the KDF underscored their dedication to upholding core values.
This incident marks the second clash between KDF and police personnel within a fortnight. On April 17, a similar altercation was reported in Lodwar, Turkana County, when around ten servicemen allegedly raided a police station to release detained colleagues.
However, the KDF disputed claims of assault and station raid, asserting that investigations into the matter had been initiated.
In another incident in Kilifi, a military officer is in police custody for allegedly assaulting a police officer while attempting to free his cousin from custody.
According to a police report, the soldier, accompanied by his uncle, stormed Bindira police station and assaulted the officer before attempting to release the detained suspect. Intervention from other officers was necessary to restrain the assailants and detain them.
These incidents underscore the need for thorough investigations and maintenance of discipline within security forces to uphold public safety and order.
