One year following the initiation of investigations into the enigmatic demise of an 82-year-old grandmother, whose remains were found nine months post-disappearance, conclusive findings elude authorities.
On June 2nd of the previous year, crime scene investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stumbled upon a badly decomposed body at a residence in Thika’s landless estate.
The deceased, Leah Njeri Githua, a widow, had been receiving financial support from her children via mobile transfers, oblivious to her demise.
The unsettling discovery, beside a dog’s carcass, prompted further scrutiny, revealing approximately 20 dead chickens on the property.
Subsequently, homicide investigators were enlisted to delve into the perplexing circumstances surrounding her death.
Following an extensive six-month probe by the DCI, investigators now concede the inability to ascertain whether Njeri was a victim of foul play or succumbed to natural causes.
Sources indicate a recommendation for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to initiate an inquest into the matter.
Njeri’s granddaughter, upon visiting the premises, reported her missing, triggering investigations that involved statements from 10 individuals, including family and neighbors.
Despite regular financial assistance from her children, none had physically visited for nearly nine months preceding her discovery.
Investigations unveiled Njeri’s solitary existence after her children left home. Samples, including bones and clothing presumed to be hers, underwent analysis and DNA testing at the Government Chemist in Nairobi.
Neighbors corroborated the timeline, affirming the last sighting of Njeri nine months earlier, expressing shock at the discovery of her remains.
Furthermore, a Nyumba Kumi official provided insights into potential developments leading to Njeri’s demise. Notably, neighbors failed to raise alarm despite her absence, attributing it to a presumed visit to her son in the city.
Detectives initially explored the possibility of foul play, surmising the perpetrator’s familiarity with Njeri’s secluded residence.
However, with inconclusive findings, the circumstances surrounding her death remain shrouded in ambiguity, leaving authorities grappling for closure.
