The Azimio Coalition in the Nairobi City County Assembly threw its weight behind a landmark cooperation agreement between the National Government and Nairobi County, terming it a transformative step that will unlock development projects worth Sh80 billion for the capital.
Addressing the press on Tuesday afternoon, the coalition lauded President William Ruto for invoking provisions of Section 6 (5) and (6) of the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011, to formalize the Cooperation Agreement with the Nairobi City County Government.
The coalition described the move as “unprecedented and bold,” saying it marks a turning point in Nairobi’s growth and service delivery framework.
Azimio MCAs further confirmed that the Nairobi City County Assembly unanimously approved the agreement, signaling what they termed as a rare moment of unity across political divides in the interest of city residents.
“The unanimous decision reflects our shared commitment to put the people of Nairobi first,” the coalition said, adding that the time for political contestation must give way to implementation and service delivery.
The leaders urged both levels of government to focus on collaboration to ensure the success of the agreement, emphasizing that tangible results — not rhetoric — should define the next phase of governance in the city.
At the same time, the coalition firmly opposed any attempts to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja, arguing that such a move would destabilize the city at a critical moment when it stands on the threshold of historic development.
Citing the guidance of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the coalition said it remains committed to supporting Sakaja to complete his mandate.
“We are unequivocally opposed to any attempts to impeach the Governor at this critical time,” the coalition stated, adding that stability and continuity in leadership are essential for the implementation of the development agenda.
The Azimio MCAs also reaffirmed support for current county leadership, noting that institutional continuity and unity of purpose are key to delivering socio-economic progress.
They maintained that their focus remains constructive politics, accountable governance, and development-driven leadership.
“Our message is clear: let us work together, protect the stability of our city, and deliver progress for every resident of Nairobi,” the coalition said.
