Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino had a public argument recently, and Babu Owino brought up concerns about the school feeding program in Nairobi County.
Babu Owino believes that the school feeding program, called ‘Dishi na County,’ which Sakaja started in August, hasn’t been helpful for Nairobi’s kids.
“Each school should have well equiped kitchen and staff, Sakajas 10 kitchens cannot feed hundreds of thousands of learners in Nairobi, the ratio of kitchens to kids is ridiculous, but again someone who ran away from school and is using fake degree certificates cannot understand this simple facts,” the MP wrote in a tweet.
Babu Owino argued that the school feeding program should have been managed by the individual schools, not the county.
He said that the program is causing problems because food deliveries are often late due to transportation issues, and this is turning it into a big problem.
He also questioned how the money collected from parents for the program is being used, given that there is a budget set for it.
“Ksh.5 per day from each parent by 1000 parents in every school amounts to 5000/- per day by 22 active school days in a month=110000/- per month.
There are 208 public primary schools in Nairobi so you get 110000 multiplied by 208=22,880,000/-.
In one year this amount=12 times 22,880,000=274,560,000/-,” Babu stated.
Governor Sakaja’s ‘Dishi na County’ program aimed to provide daily meals to around 250,000 children in Nairobi, with special dietary considerations for kids with health issues based on assessments by medical professionals at schools or early childhood development centers.
