Two construction workers were tragically shot and killed at a site in the Mutuati area of Meru County, in what is believed to be an attack orchestrated by fleeing bandits.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at a private farm where a group of workers was engaged in building a wall in the Kamongombe area, located within the Amwathi 1 sub-location of Kabachi.
At the time of the attack, there were seven workers present.
The assailants opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the deaths of George Odhiambo, 27, and Mateta M’kiuga, 60.
The remaining workers were discovered hiding in fear, according to police reports.
A response team has been organized to pursue the attackers and investigate the motives behind the assault.
It is suspected that the gunmen were initially targeting livestock in nearby villages when they launched the sudden attack.
The region has seen a rise in banditry related to livestock raids, leading to violence that has resulted in the deaths and injuries of local herders.
This surge in criminal activity has prompted widespread complaints and calls for action from the community.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital, where they await postmortem examinations.
The government is actively working to combat this issue by deploying additional personnel and acquiring more equipment to strengthen security operations.
The area is currently part of a broader initiative aimed at recovering illegal firearms from civilians.
This operation, which began three months ago, involves multi-agency teams focusing on several counties, including Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, and Isiolo.
In addition to immediate responses, the government is emphasizing strategic investments and sustainable development as part of its crime control strategy in Kenya’s northern frontier and the Kerio Valley.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki stated that the long-term goal is to empower local communities to actively participate in combating cattle rustling and to engage in legitimate economic activities.
He announced plans to provide subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to residents, aiming to revitalize farming as a source of income.
“We are committed to dismantling not just the criminal elements but the entire network that supports the livestock rustling industry,” he affirmed.
