All roads lead to Nakuru High School on Wednesday and Thursday next week as hundreds of young athletes gather to compete for a place in Kenya’s World Schools Cross Country Championships.
Competition for places on the final team is expected to be tight, especially with only 10 places up for grabs in the three categories in which Kenya will be represented.
In a letter addressed to regional directors of education, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has asked for each region to send the best of the best in cross country for the national trials.
“Kindly fast-track the cross country championships calendar to allow for the availability of the team for national duty.
The top 10 finishers in each category will qualify for confirmation into Team Kenya,” the Ministry said.
Kenya will be hoping to continue its longstanding dominance of cross country by extending the same at the school level during the global competition, which will be held on African soil for the first time.
There will be three categories of competition including Under-12, Under-15, and Under-18 both for boys and girls.
So far, 20 countries have confirmed participation in the championships, set for May 12 at the Ngong Racecourse, Nairobi.
