The Bipartisan Talks Committee met with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula today to discuss their need for financial support to fulfill their mission.
The meeting, lasting about an hour, was attended by key figures including Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, and EALA MP Hassan Omar.
Kalonzo arrived at Parliament around 11:30 am and greeted fellow parliamentarians before heading straight to the Speaker’s office.
The bipartisan committee has been facing challenges due to insufficient funding, which has hindered their progress.
Despite both houses of parliament passing a motion to establish the bipartisan committee in law, the parliamentary commission did not allocate funds for them to carry out their duties.
The committee sought the Speaker’s assistance in setting aside a budget, although the exact amount required from Kenyan taxpayers is yet to be determined.
The technical committee had scheduled meetings for today and Friday to review 142 memoranda, with the bipartisan talks committee planning to convene on Monday to discuss the agreed-upon agenda.
This meeting with the Speaker comes amidst growing concerns that one faction within the coalition is obstructing the talks.
Azimio One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga is expected to make a significant announcement regarding the way forward.
The talks team had initially aimed to complete their task within 60 days, but two weeks have passed with limited progress.
