Detectives in Kagio Town, Kirinyaga County are investigating a case where a nine-year-old grade girl who went missing on Friday was later found dead.
Residents of Kagio town were shocked after her body was found on Sunday night dumped in river Rwamuthambi, with visible signs showing she had been defiled before the suspect strangled her.
Her mother said the girl did not return home on Friday, prompting her to report the matter at Kagio police station.
She told police she got worried after her daughter did not return home and went to seek help from her neighbors who also circulated and shared it with the town including all local churches.
The locals are said to have pointed fingers at a trader, who sells milk to her and was the last person to be seen with her while buying sweets for the girl, before disappearing with her to an unknown place.
Police said that Kagio residents decided to go and look for the girl at the man’s rented house but they found the man was not home at around 2 am.
Police are looking for the suspect who is yet to return home since Friday.
The body was found after a pipe in the Rwamuthambi river blocked the body from being washed downstream as it would have taken days to find it.
Kirinyaga West Sub-county police commander Moses Koskei told media that police have launched investigations into the matter.
“We are looking for the man who is well known to the girl’s mother, detectives are on him,” he said.
Meanwhile, police are investigating a suspected drowning of a boy aged six in Nairobi River.
The body was recovered in Mwiki on May 14 evening by residents who suspected he was swept downstream.
Police said the deceased was still in a school uniform at the time the body was found.
Authorities suspect the boy drowned as he crossed the raging waters adding that he might have drowned on the same day as he left school given he was dressed in uniform on a Sunday when his body was found.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
