Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Chelilim recently emphasized the importance of adopting climate-smart agricultural technologies among farmers in the county to enhance productivity and address food security challenges nationwide.
Speaking at the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) National Show held at Eldoret showgrounds, the governor highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth,” which underscores the pivotal role of climate-smart practices in ensuring food and nutritional security, fostering agricultural growth, and boosting trade.
In addressing the pressing issue of climate change’s adverse effects, Governor Chelilim emphasized the necessity for sustainable and resilient farming practices.
He remarked, “As a country, we continue to witness the impact of climate change best explained through erratic weather patterns making it impossible for our hardworking farmers to make a solid decision on when to plough and when to plant.”
Acknowledging the efforts of the national government, the governor praised the initiatives aimed at supporting farmers amidst climate challenges, such as providing subsidized fertilizers in a timely manner, enabling proper planning for the adoption of climate-smart agriculture.
Governor Chelilim also highlighted his administration’s commitment to combatting climate change through various measures, including the establishment of a soil testing laboratory at the Agricultural Mechanisation Services (AMS) and the provision of climate-smart farm machinery.
He urged farmers to leverage these services as they prepare for the planting season, emphasizing the importance of embracing best practices.
Furthermore, the governor outlined the county’s focus on enhancing productivity by prioritizing high-value crops like coffee and avocado.
He mentioned the distribution of coffee and avocado seedlings, aiming to support farmers in diversifying their crops and increasing yields.
In urging the national government to ensure the timely and sufficient supply of subsidized fertilizers, Governor Chelilim emphasized the importance of early preparation and input availability for farmers striving to double their production compared to the previous year.
Through these concerted efforts and a collective commitment to climate-smart agriculture, Governor Chelilim envisions a more resilient and sustainable farming sector that not only addresses food security challenges but also contributes to economic growth and environmental preservation.
