A British national who was being detained by authorities for drug trafficking died while being treated at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Anthony Richard has been in remand since last year when he was arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
He was charged with the offense of; trafficking in narcotic drugs contrary to; section 4(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act No. 4 of 1994 and remanded at the Industrial Area Remand and Allocation.
He then fell sick while in remand before he was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital where died on June 30, 2023 afternoon.
Police said he had been sick and weak.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and further probe.
Many foreigners are arrested at the airport for trafficking drugs.
Most of the traffickers usually try to sneak the narcotics out of the country, police say.
In 2019, the then European Union Ambassador to Kenya Simon Mordue said the Kenyan port of Mombasa accounted for 30 percent of illegal heroin smuggled into the EU market.
Most of the heroin in the country originates from Afghanistan through the Indian Ocean while cocaine originates from South America.
