Bugatti has introduced its latest model, the Bugatti Tourbillon, a hybrid powerhouse boasting an impressive price of $4 million. This new vehicle is set to succeed the $3.3 million, 1,500 horsepower Bugatti Chiron.
Despite expectations leaning towards an all-electric model, particularly after Bugatti’s 2021 merger with Rimac—a Croatian company known for its all-electric Rimac Nevera supercar—Mate Rimac, CEO of the newly formed Bugatti Rimac, clarified that an all-electric Bugatti was never in the plans.
He emphasized the desire to maintain the essence of Bugatti’s mechanically powered legacy while enhancing its performance, resulting in the creation of an exceptionally powerful plug-in hybrid.
The Bugatti Tourbillon follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, the Chiron and Veyron, featuring a colossal 16-cylinder gasoline engine.
This engine, developed in collaboration with British race car engineering firm Cosworth, is complemented by three robust electric motors.
Positioned with one at the rear and two at the front, these motors alone generate at least 800 horsepower. Combined, the Tourbillon delivers a minimum of 1,800 horsepower, according to Bugatti Rimac.
To compensate for the absence of turbochargers in the new gas engine—a contrast to the Chiron’s four turbochargers that boosted its power—the electric motors play a crucial role.
“We wanted this new engine to be ‘naturally aspirated,’ meaning there would be no turbochargers,” Rimac explained.
“We wanted to make the most exciting, most emotional combustion engine possible,” Rimac said, “and that is high revving, naturally aspirated.”
The car’s interior pays homage to traditional machinery, with the Tourbillon’s name derived from a set of gears that ensure accuracy in a mechanical watch. The instrument display inside the Bugatti is inspired by mechanical watch dials.
“One of the first things we did when the new company was formed, I took the whole team to Switzerland and we visited a few watchmakers,” Rimac told CNN.
The central speedometer display features two needles resembling clock hands, with the long hand indicating the car’s speed and the short hand showing the revolutions per minute of the high-revving 16-cylinder engine.
