Busia Senator and presidential hopeful Okiya Omtatah has strongly denied allegations linking him to the alleged abduction of popular X satirist and cartoonist Kibet Bull.
The accusations were made by political activist Francis Gaitho, who claimed in a tweet that Omtatah was collaborating with “the regime” to betray young activists, aiding in their arrest or abduction.
Gaitho wrote: “@OkiyaOmtatah is now selling out young activists to the regime. I warned you to take care of these sell-outs. They’re all over.”
In response, Omtatah took to his X account to dismiss the claims, expressing shock and disappointment.
He emphasized his lifelong commitment to justice and the rule of law, calling the allegations “absurd” and “deeply disturbing.”
“These allegations are false, baseless, and frankly, quite imaginative. It seems I’ve suddenly been cast as the villain in someone’s fiction,” Omtatah stated.
He went on to explain that he met Kibet Bull in good faith, just as he regularly interacts with many Kenyans.
“If he has been harmed, we must focus on finding the real perpetrators and holding them accountable, not distracting ourselves with conspiracy theories,” he added.
Omtatah further urged Kenyans to avoid spreading misinformation and instead focus on the crucial task of protecting citizens from oppression.
“Let’s refrain from peddling falsehoods that only serve to distract us from the urgent task of protecting Kenyans from oppression.
Let us remain united in the fight for rule of law, good governance & justice and demand accountability where it truly belongs,” he wrote.
The controversy surrounding Omtatah’s name comes amid widespread concerns over the disappearance of Kibet Bull, a well-known cartoonist who gained popularity for his critical depictions of political figures on X.
Bull’s last post on December 24 featured a silhouette of Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen alongside an image believed to represent President William Ruto, with a caption referring to Murkomen’s involvement in abductions.
Kibet’s family revealed to Citizen Digital that he went missing while trying to follow up on the disappearance of his brother, Rony Kiplangat.
Kiplangat had been unreachable since Saturday, and the family initially thought he had gone to church.
After failing to contact him, they discovered he was not at home, prompting Kibet to travel from Njoro to Nairobi to investigate further.
Kibet had also been scheduled to attend an event with Senator Omtatah. After the function, Kibet was supposed to return to his friend’s house in Kikuyu.
However, by 9 p.m. on Tuesday, he was no longer reachable by phone, and his family became increasingly concerned for his safety.
The family revealed that Kibet had been avoiding Nairobi due to fears of being targeted for his outspoken criticism of President Ruto and the government.
They reported his disappearance to the police, and an OB (Occurrence Book) entry was made.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, while the family remains in distress, hoping for Kibet’s safe return.
