President William Ruto is set to chair a special Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning to address the rising flood crisis across the country, following a significant increase in the death toll.
The President made this announcement on the sidelines of the International Development Association (IDA21) summit in Nairobi on Monday.
“Tomorrow morning, we are having a Cabinet meeting to discuss additional measures my government is going to take to make sure that my citizens, who are victims of climate change suffering mudslides and floods, are looked after,” President Ruto stated.
As of Monday evening, official figures indicated that the ongoing floods had claimed 166 lives since heavy rains began in March across most parts of Kenya.
The government spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, disclosed on Citizen TV’s Monday Report program that 66 people lost their lives on Monday alone.
These fatalities include the tragic aftermath of flash floods that struck Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, on Monday morning.
The floods, caused by a nearby river bursting its banks after heavy rains, led to widespread destruction of homes and vehicles, with at least 48 people confirmed dead.
The Kenya Red Cross has been actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts in the area.
President Ruto’s Cabinet meeting aims to evaluate and enhance the government’s response to the flood disaster, ensuring support and relief for affected citizens.
