Retired Archbishop Cardinal John Njue is alive and well, contrary to the false rumors circulating on social media on Friday morning.
Charles Kinyua, a notable figure in the Catholic Church and founder of the CK Foundation, confirmed that he had spoken with Cardinal Njue, finding him in good health.
Kinyua urged the public to stop spreading misleading information, stating emphatically, “The cardinal is fine. STOP THE RUMORS!! PLEASE.
I just talked to him.”
Various credible sources, including journalist Linus Kaikai, have also verified that the veteran bishop is alive, with Kaikai tweeting, “CARDINAL NJUE IS ALIVE and WELL,” further dispelling the unfounded claims.
The rumors about Cardinal Njue’s death triggered significant concern among those who know him. Many took to social media to express their disbelief and relief upon learning of his well-being.
Cardinal Njue, who resigned as Archbishop of Nairobi in 2021 after reaching the retirement age of 75, adhered to church protocols that require bishops to formally notify the Pope of their intention to retire at that age.
He was succeeded by Bishop David Kamau, who had served as the Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi since December 1999.
Cardinal Njue was appointed head of the Nairobi diocese in November 2007, taking over from Ndingi Mwana Nzeki.
The swift spread of misinformation highlights the challenges of social media, where rumors can quickly escalate.
Supporters of Cardinal Njue are relieved by the confirmations of his health and continue to respect his significant contributions to the Catholic Church in Kenya.
