Four people accused of robbing residents in Kerugoya were brought before a court in Kerugoya.
The court has allowed the police to keep these suspects in custody for six more days while they continue to investigate the case.
The Kerugoya Principal Magistrate, Charity Kipkorir Cheruto, gave this permission because the prosecution convinced the court that it was necessary to detain the suspects.
The suspects are currently being held at the Kerugoya police station until the coming Monday.
These four individuals, namely James Murimi, Paul Macharia, Violet Wangechi, and Jackline Nyakio, were caught on a security camera causing trouble for the people of Kerugoya on a Monday night.
The video from the security camera has become popular online.
It shows the suspects violently attacking two men.
One of the suspects is seen tripping the victims, and then the others join in to steal things from them, although we don’t know exactly what they stole.
Detectives from the Kerugoya police station arrested these four suspects in different places.
Two women and one man were arrested in Kimuri estate, while the fourth suspect was arrested in Karia village.
This incident has happened at a time when there are worries about increasing crime in the area.
In July, the police had mentioned that they were trying to catch a gang that had been causing trouble for the local people.
The Deputy County Commissioner of Kirinyaga Central, Daniel Ndege, has expressed concern about the rising insecurity.
He said, “We have several crime reports from locals in trading centers along Ngorano, Kianjege, Mukinduri, Njegas, Kiamuthambi, Mutitu, and Kagumo among others.”
Local residents have reported that this gang has been targeting shops and businesses, causing a lot of damage.
“The gang moves around in different vehicles.
Sometimes, they use their vehicles to break locks by pulling off the chains,” said Paul Munene, a trader.
The residents have praised the police officers at Mutitu police post for their quick response when they call for help.
“Our officers have been responding immediately.
We urge them to conduct more patrols in order to tame the gang,” another added.
