Central Regional Commissioner Fredrick Shisia has dismissed claims that the police killed two suspected robbers in Kigumo area, Murang’a County.
The two are suspected to be among the group that looted Unaitas Sacco, Kigumo branch on Sunday going away with an unknown amount of money and two guns from police who were guarding the Sacco.
Shisia Tuesday said the police were able to arrest the two suspects who were coming from the forest carrying a bag with a lot of money.
The money contained in the bag was suspected to be stolen from Unaitas Sacco.
“It is at that point that the police insisted that they show them where the firearms were. In the process, they went back to the forest to assist the police trace,” the regional commissioner said.
In the forest, according to Shisia, the police met gunfire.
This prompted them to take cover and engage the group, which is believed to be part of the two.
It is in the process that the two suspects were fatally injured.
The regional commissioner said, thus, it was not true that the police killed the two.
He urged Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the matter and share it with the public.
IPOA on Monday launched an investigation into the extrajudicial killing of the two suspects.
The authority’s chairperson Anne Makori said a team had already been dispatched to the region and had since established that the police were part of the killing.
“AK-47 was taken from our officers with specific rounds of ammunition but when the firearm was recovered it was less, same to G3. So we believe the two firearms were used in exchange with our police,” Shisia said.
He added that no police officer was injured in the incident.
