Chaos erupted at the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) headquarters when supporters of Cleophas Malala, the party’s Secretary General, stormed the offices.
The situation escalated as Joe Khalende, who also claims the title of Secretary General, left the premises visibly injured.
Khalende was seen with blood on his shirt and a head wound.
The turmoil began when Khalende led a faction within the party to challenge Malala’s position.
His group contended that Malala had been suspended from any party duties,
an assertion Khalende used to declare himself the new acting Secretary General.
As Malala’s supporters attempted to access the headquarters, they were confronted by a police blockade.
The crowd, carrying placards and chanting slogans such as “Bado mapambano” (which means “Still fighting”), showed strong support for Malala.
The conflict between Khalende and Malala is rooted in political disagreements.
Khalende accused Malala of sabotaging the Broad-Based Government initiative spearheaded by
UDA party leader President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Khalende criticized Malala for allegedly undermining the party’s efforts to establish this coalition government.
“Malala has been actively working against our party leader and the formation of the broad-based government.
I am here to confirm that he is no longer the Secretary General of UDA. I, Joe Khalende, am now taking over the role,” Khalende declared.
The situation remains volatile as both factions continue to vie for control, underscoring deep divisions within the UDA.
The police presence at the headquarters highlights the seriousness of the unrest, with both sides resolutely defending their positions.
