Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera tragically passed away in a helicopter crash on Tuesday, leaving the nation he guided through two terms in deep sorrow.
Leaders throughout Latin America expressed their condolences following the devastating incident.
Pinera, aged 74, along with three others, was aboard the helicopter when it plunged into a lake in southern Chile.
Despite efforts by rescue teams, Pinera was declared deceased upon their arrival at the scene. The remaining passengers survived the crash.
While it’s been reported that Pinera may have been piloting the helicopter, this hasn’t been officially confirmed, nor has the intended destination of the flight.

Pinera, who often enjoyed spending summers near Chile’s scenic southern lakes, was known to pilot his helicopter on occasion.
President Gabriel Boric announced a national mourning period of three days, with plans underway for a state funeral on Friday to honor the former leader, who served two separate terms from 2010 to 2022.
Carolina Toha, the Interior Minister, confirmed that Pinera’s body was recovered from the lake near Lago Ranco, a town in the area.
“We remember him for his lifelong dedication to public service,” remarked Toha, who has been actively involved in managing recent wildfire crises.
Pinera gained international recognition for his leadership during the remarkable rescue of 33 miners trapped beneath the Atacama desert in 2010.
This event captured global attention and was later depicted in the 2014 film “The 33.”
