A 23-year-old construction worker was killed after a foundation trench collapsed at a construction site in Kiambaa Sub-County, Kiambu County.
Locals reported a worker had been buried under a heap of soil inside the foundation trench of a retaining wall under construction on Tuesday evening, police said.
Police officers visited the scene at Kagongo area.
Preliminary investigations established that 12 workers were excavating the foundation trench when it suddenly caved in.
One of the workers, identified as Luis Otieno, 23, was completely buried by the collapsing soil and died at the scene.
Another worker, narrowly escaped the collapse without physical injuries but suffered severe shock. He was rushed to Kihara Level 4 Hospital, where he was treated and later discharged in stable condition.
The remaining 10 workers escaped unhurt.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers processed and documented the scene before the body of the deceased, which had no visible external injuries, was moved to the Kihara Level 4 Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal workplace accident, including whether safety measures at the construction site were adequate.
Meanwhile, police have arrested a 33-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing his three-year-old son before attempting to take his own life in Gatundu South Sub-County, Kiambu County.
At the scene, the police found the body of the boy, aged three, lying inside a one-bedroom iron-sheet house with multiple stab wounds to the neck.
Preliminary investigations established that the child’s parents had separated about six months ago, and the boy had been living with his mother in Kigongo Village.
Police said the child’s father, identified as Gabriel Gachuhi, 33, picked up the boy on Monday, July 20, and took him to his house.
Investigators believe that at around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, he allegedly stabbed the child to death using a knife before turning the weapon on himself in an apparent suicide attempt.
The motive for the killing has not yet been established.
The suspect was rushed to Gatundu Level Five Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition under police guard.
Crime scene investigators processed and documented the scene and recovered the suspected murder weapon.
The child’s body was transferred to the Gatundu Level Five Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Police said the suspect will face murder charges once he is medically fit, as investigations into the incident continue.
