Persistent pressure from Kenyans forced police to release Kenyan content creator Billy Simani popularly known as “Crazy Nairobian” from custody.
He was given a free bond and told he may be called anytime over claims of threatening some unknown individual.
This followed pressure from other content creators, human rights organizations, and lawyers.
He was being detained at Muthaiga police cell before his release at about 4 pm.
Several people had called for his release. A platform on X, formerly, Twitter had been created to discuss the issue and attracted the attention of more than 55,000 followers including President William Ruto.
Ruto quit shortly after joining the conversation.
He was arrested Friday over claims of sending threatening messages to an undisclosed person.
The said complainant withdrew the complaint. This was after many calls were made to authorities on social media calling on his release.
Simani is among those who had been detained over ongoing protests over proposed increase in taxes.
More protesters are planning to come out on Tuesday when Members of Parliament will vote on the proposed taxes.
Anti riot police have been mobilized to man Parliament and State House, Nairobi over the protests.
The protesters have said they will be peaceful and asked for police protection.
